This image follows directly after the Chess Pieces frame from Actual Sho, part of a choreographed rotation captured over several sequential exposures. The performers are gathered on the circular platform at center stage, the disc momentarily locked, creating an illusion of motion that defines the piece’s cinematic precision.
At lower left, Sean Kilcoyne observes through binoculars, illuminated by the same amber light produced by a salvaged fragment of antique gel originally sourced from the University of Washington Drama Department and reused in Edifice Next.
From this angle, the layered interplay of color, costume, and projection becomes especially vivid. Costumes designed by Ariel Jones and Sue Fox shimmer and fracture the light against the sharply defined grid of the architectural background. The resulting composition—fluid movement framed by static geometry and the warm peripheral glow of Sean’s light—captures the uniquely architectural, interdisciplinary aesthetic of George Coates Performance Works in the 1980s San Francisco performance scene.
