"Shag" from 1988, directed by Zelda Barron and written by Lanier Laney and Terry Sweeney, is a breezy, nostalgic coming-of-age dramedy set in the summer of 1963. It follows four Southern girlfriends, Carson (Phoebe Cates), Melaina (Bridget Fonda), Luanne (Page Hannah), and Pudge (Annabeth Gish), who sneak away from their conservative hometown to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a weekend of dancing, boys, and self-discovery before Carson’s impending marriage. The film captures the era with colorful costumes, beachside locations, and the infectious shag dance craze of the Carolinas, while blending humor, romance, and period detail. Supporting performances from Scott Coffey, Tyrone Power Jr., and Jeff Yagher round out the cast, with much of the filming done on location in Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, enhancing its summery authenticity. The soundtrack is packed with early 1960’s hits by The Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke, and other Motown and R&B staples, anchoring the film in its musical moment. Produced on a modest budget, this has since earned minor cult status for its mix of youthful energy, period charm, and heartfelt portrayal of friendship and young love. While this is really an ensemble effort of several fine actresses, Phoebe Cates, as usual, plays the sweet but sexy leading lady perfectly and is a standout. Bridget Fonda, who was relatively unknown at this time, also does a great job with her unique character, and her star was about to rise high in the next few years. This capped a very successful, decade-long run of popular teen romantic comedies, but this one has a little less raunch and a little more heart, and with that, and the star power alone, it's definitely a memorable watch.
