The journals collection is part of the Wellcome Library, one of the world’s major resources for the study of medical history.  The Library houses 2.5 million items of exceptional diversity, including books, films, archives, manuscripts and artworks from around the world.

The journals comprise a very large collection, going back as far as the late eighteenth century, and are representative of the broad span and unusual nature of Wellcome’s holdings.

In the context of this collection, a journal is defined as any publication issued under the same title in a succession of discrete issues, on a regular basis (eg. monthly, fortnightly, weekly, etc.).  The items in the collection include: scholarly periodicals focussing on medicine, such as Academia de Medicina de México (1836-1853); non-academic titles which nonetheless had a focus on topics pertaining to health, such as The magazine of popular science and journal of the useful arts (1836-1837); and proceedings of the acts and happenings of a particular society, such as Proceedings of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society (1847-1854).
